The area is made out of the long and limited Palawan Island, in addition to various other littler islands encompassing it, totalling about 1,780 islands and islets. The Calamianes Group of Islands toward the upper east comprises of Busuanga, Coron, Culion, and Linapacan islands. Balabac Island is situated off the southern tip, isolated from Borneo by the Balabac Strait. Also, Palawan covers the Cuyo Islands in the Sulu Sea. The debated Spratly Islands, found a couple of hundred kilometers toward the west, are considered some portion of Palawan by the Philippines, and is privately called the "Kalayaan Group of Islands".
